Spa Enduro Classic
Our Spa Enduro Classic event took place on Saturday 25th November and saw 16 2-3 driver teams battle it out in a 3 hour endurance race around the legendary Spa Francorchamps circuit. The pre-race test the previous week saw teams testing each of the 4 cars available for the much anticipated event. Car choice was limited to 4 historic GT’s; Di Tomaso Pantera, Ferrari Daytona, Porsche 911 RSR and the 3.1L Ford Capri. Each car, despite the Race Hut balance of performance, retained its own set of characteristics with the Di Tomaso and Daytona excelling in the run up the Kemmel straight in the first sector and the lighter, more agile Capri and Porsche using the twisty middle sector to it’s advantage.
First on the timetable was a 45 minute qualifying session where teams made their final laps of practice and set about trying to grab a spot on the front row of the grid. Although of minimal importance ahead of a 3 hour race, qualifying saw all four car manufacturers in the top 5!
The start of the race was very clean and saw a battle for the lead amongst a breakaway bunch of 3. With different approaches being employed by different teams up and down the grid, the order was well and truly shaken by the middle portion of the race. It wasn’t until the final pit-stops were all completed (2.5 hours in) that the picture became slightly clearer. Our eventual winners had managed to fuel save and subsequently had to stop one less time than the rest of the pack and therefore held a substantial lead. The battle for 2nd however wasn’t decided until the line with both 2nd and 3rd places finishing the race on fumes!
Our first 3hr Enduro was enjoyed by all and involved great commoradory throughout the race all through the pack. One moment to remember was the long time BTCC safety car driver, Scott Stringfellow, pushing a fellow competitor back to the pitlane after running out of fuel just 200m from the pit entrance – one which received massive applause throughout the venue!
The event, which was very well attended, is a prolouge of things to come from the Race Hut Oxford with more 3 hour enduro Saturday’s planned for 2018. Stay tuned to our social media pages for the reveal of new events.
