The History of Formula 3
Ahead of our upcoming Race Night here’s a crash (apologies for the poor choice of words) course on on Formula 3 and why it’s so popular!
Formula 3, or as more commonly known as F3, is a single seater category which has been around since 1950 in many different guises. However, one thing that’s stayed constant in the last 70 years is that it’s always been the testing ground for every soon-to-be Formula 1 star!
As you can see, one of the main things that it gets from Formula 1 is the aerodynamics, just look at how the wings have evolved to the current day!
Not sure on F3’s credentials? Well, see if you’ve heard of any of these names:
Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Max Verstappen, Ayrton Senna, Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo all the way down to the likes of Narain Karthikeyan (!) have come through the Formula 3 category.
And it’s not just in the modern era either, in times gone by Formula 1 drivers also raced in Formula 3 and Formula 2 series on their ‘spare’ weekends even years after winning the series – classic names like Graham Hill, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet have all graced the junior Formula and the list goes on!
Have a look how the series has developed over the years…
So basically, they are smaller, lighter, nippier Formula 1 cars! Fancy driving one of these at the age of 17? Then get training on our simulators! Read more about the history of the series here…
